A personal journey from confusion to understanding
Welcome to Unmasking Narcissism.
My name is Herman Liesemeijer. I am a Dutch writer and content creator, but more importantly, I am someone who knows from personal experience how deeply narcissistic abuse can affect a person’s life.
For many years, I struggled to understand the emotional manipulation and psychological mistreatment I experienced. I knew something was wrong, but I couldn’t fully explain what was happening or why certain relationships left me feeling confused, insecure and emotionally exhausted.
It took me a long time to find the answers.
Today, I share what I have learned in the hope that my experiences and insights will help others recognize unhealthy relationship patterns, understand their own experiences and find their way toward recovery.
Growing up with a narcissistic mother
My experiences with narcissistic abuse began in childhood.
Growing up with a mother who displayed narcissistic behavior had a profound influence on how I saw myself and the world around me. Emotional manipulation, guilt and a lack of genuine emotional security became familiar parts of my life.
When you grow up in such an environment, you don’t necessarily recognize that something is wrong. What happens at home becomes your definition of normal.
The consequences can follow you well into adulthood.
For years, I tried to maintain a relationship with my mother. I hoped that things would eventually change, that we would somehow develop the healthy mother-son relationship I had always wanted.
But that never happened.
At the age of 47, I finally made the difficult decision to break off contact.
It was painful, but it also marked an important turning point in my life.
For the first time, I could begin to free myself from patterns that had influenced me since childhood.
Finding answers and rebuilding my life
My journey toward understanding narcissistic abuse did not happen overnight.
At one point, I came across an article about Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Suddenly, many experiences that had seemed confusing or contradictory began to make sense.
It was as though pieces of a puzzle were finally falling into place.
I started reading, researching and reflecting on my own experiences. Gradually, I began to understand how emotional manipulation works, why it can be so difficult to recognize and why its effects can persist long after a harmful relationship has ended.
Understanding what happened was an important step, but knowledge alone was not enough.
Recovery also meant learning to recognize unhealthy patterns, establish boundaries, rebuild my self-confidence and trust my own judgment again.
Along the way, I discovered that professional help can be valuable, but that not every professional fully understands the dynamics and long-term consequences of narcissistic abuse.
My own recovery involved combining personal insights with practical techniques and a growing understanding of human behavior.
It was not a straight path. There were setbacks, difficult realizations and moments when old patterns resurfaced.
But over time, I began to regain something I had lost: the freedom to be myself.
Why I created this website
One of the most difficult aspects of narcissistic abuse is how invisible it can be to others.
People who have never experienced it may struggle to understand why someone stays in a harmful relationship, why leaving can be so difficult or why the emotional consequences can last for years.
Sometimes, even the person experiencing the abuse doesn’t fully understand what is happening.
I know that feeling.
That is why I started writing about narcissism, emotional manipulation and recovery.
I wanted to share the information I wish I had found much earlier in my life.
Unmasking Narcissism is now a place where I bring together articles about narcissistic behavior, unhealthy relationship dynamics and the psychological effects of emotional abuse.
My goal is not to tell readers how they should live their lives. Every situation is different, and everyone has their own decisions to make.
Instead, I want to offer information, recognition and perspectives that may help people understand their experiences more clearly.
Sometimes, simply discovering that someone else has experienced something similar can make an enormous difference.
What you’ll find here
The articles on Unmasking Narcissism explore a range of subjects related to narcissism and emotional well-being, including:
- Recognizing narcissistic behavior: Understanding manipulation, gaslighting, emotional control and other destructive relationship patterns.
- Narcissistic abuse in families and relationships: Exploring how harmful dynamics can develop between partners, parents, children and other people in our lives.
- The emotional consequences of abuse: Understanding confusion, guilt, self-doubt, anxiety and the loss of self-confidence.
- Setting boundaries: Learning to recognize your own needs and protect your emotional well-being.
- Recovery and personal growth: Exploring ways to rebuild confidence, regain independence and move forward after difficult experiences.
My articles draw on personal experience, research and insights I have gathered over the years.
I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist, and the information on this website is not a substitute for professional mental health care. I also believe it is important to distinguish between narcissistic traits and a clinical diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
My purpose is to encourage understanding, not to diagnose people I have never met.
A few words about recovery
If there is one thing I have learned, it is that recovery cannot be rushed.
There is no single method that works for everyone, and there is no fixed timetable for overcoming the effects of emotional abuse.
Some people are still trying to understand what is happening in their relationships. Others have already left but continue to struggle with the emotional consequences.
Both situations deserve understanding.
For me, recovery was not about forgetting the past or pretending it never happened.
It was about understanding its influence, recognizing patterns that no longer served me and gradually learning to make different choices.
It was also about accepting that I could not change other people’s behavior, but I could change how I responded to it.
That realization gave me back a sense of control over my own life.
Why I continue to write
I know how lonely and confusing narcissistic abuse can feel.
I also know how powerful it can be when you finally find words for experiences you have struggled to explain.
That is what motivates me to keep sharing my knowledge and personal insights.
I don’t claim to have all the answers. I am simply someone who has lived through difficult experiences, spent years trying to understand them and wants to make that knowledge available to others.
If an article on this website helps you recognize a harmful pattern, understand your feelings or take even a small step toward a healthier life, then sharing my story has been worthwhile.
Thank you for visiting Unmasking Narcissism.
